Chicopee Comp vs Commerce

CHICOPEE-The Commerce Red Raiders (2-2) scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game and led from start to finish in a 20-6 victory over Chicopee Comp Colts (0-5) to secure their second win of the season.

The Red Raiders’ third play from scrimmage went for a 45 yard touchdown run by Dvonte Sewell, who had 26 carries for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Commerce quarterback Marques Gibson played an outstanding game. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 161 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and completed two long passes down field. One of them was Commerce’s second touchdown of the game, a 56 yard bomb from quarterback Marques Gibson to Nasir Thomas and after a successful two point conversion, Commerce held a 14-0 lead.

With 4:13 left in the second quarter, Commerce took a commanding 20-0 lead on a 3 yard pass from Gibson to Gabe Roman.

The Red Raiders were able to overcome 8 penalties for 85 yards, including 4 personal fouls.

Commerce’s defense was stout the whole game. They forced four turnovers and Gabe Roman, Nicolas Perry, and Nasir Thomas all had interceptions for the Red Raiders.

Chicopee Comp scored their only points of the game on a 35 yard pass from Michael Whitsett to Mike Bombard with 1:51 left before halftime.

Whitsett had 166 yards passing and a touchdown for the Colts, but also threw three interceptions and only completed 14 of 33 pass attempts. Six of his passes were caught by Cam Kagan, who had 74 yards receiving in a strong performance.

Whitsett also led Chicopee Comp in rushing with 28 yards on 7 carries. Unfortunately, his fumble on the opening drive led Commerce’s first touchdown.

Dylan English had two sacks to lead the Colt defense.

Chicopee Comp will take on Amherst next week at 7 p.m. while Commerce lines up against Chicopee at 5 p.m.
