The Cathedral Panthers defeated the Belchertown Orioles by rushing for 338 yards after a hail mary pass gave them the lead as time expired in the second quarter.

With three seconds on the clock, Cathedral quarterback Josh Wyzik heaved the ball down the middle of the field where senior Alex Provost juggled it multiple times before securing the catch and beat two Belchertown defenders and give Cathedral a 20-15 lead going into halftime.

After Belchertown turned the ball over on downs at the Cathedral five yard line, the Panthers went on a 14 play, 95 yard drive that consumed 7:26 of clock time and ended in a Wyzik touchdown run that extended the lead to 28-15.

Belchertown was able to answer when quarterback Nick Leduc connected on a four yard touchdown pass to Steven Boudreau, but Cathedral ate up too much clock time with their pounding running game, which featured three players with 10 carries or more.

Wyzik was only 2-7 for 76 yards, but his hail mary was the turning point for momentum and he led Cathedral in rushing with 156 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Senior Veshon Sharp had 50 yards on 13 carries and Sophomore Tim Patterson ran the ball 10 times for 55 yards.

Nick Leduc played outstanding for the Orioles as he fired three touchdown passes and racked up 201 yards through the air on 10-19 passing.

Junior receiver Jake Bradway hauled in 7 of Leduc’s 10 completion and had 149 yards receiving with two touchdowns.

The first half featured exciting back and forth action. The Orioles struck first when Bradway took a screen pass from Leduc 40 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0.

Cathedral responded with two touchdown drives. Wyzik ran 11 yards for a score to make it 7-6 with 8:31 left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, Tim Patterson scored on a 24 yard run to make it 12-6.

Belchertown responded with a 29 yard pass from Leduc to Bradway for a 15-12 lead with 1:48 to go until halftime.
