Belchertown vs Athol (Senior Night)

BELCHERTOWN- The Belchertown Orioles (2-6, 2-5) seized the lead before halftime and was able to overcome three consecutive interceptions in the second half to defeat the Athol Red Raiders (2-6, 2-4) on senior night 22-16.

Belchertown quarterback Nick Leduc, one of three seniors honored before the game, led the team by scoring all three touchdowns. He rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and was 7 of 15 passing for 107 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw four interceptions.

Belchertown trailed 8-7 with halftime approaching, but only needed sixteen seconds to take control of the game. With 1:07 left before the break, Leduc hit Jake Bradway for an 8 yard fade in the back corner of the end zone to make it 14-8. Sixteen seconds later, Leduc hit Bradway for a 52 yard touchdown on a screen pass following a successful onside kick to make it 22-8. Bradway finished with 5 catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

Athol cut the lead to one possession with time winding down in the third quarter. Jerry Parker hit Andrew Poor for their second touchdown connection of the game to make it 22-16 with 0:51 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Red Raiders had multiple chances to take the lead in the fourth. Leduc threw three interceptions on three consecutive passes. Each time, Belchertown’s defense stood tall and forced Athol to punt or turn it over on downs.

The Oriole defense was also able to corral the two quarterback system run by Athol. Andrew Poor was held in check, completing 4-11 passes for 28 yards and one interception while Jerry Parker only completed 5-20 pass attempts for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Parker also rushed for 106 yards in 24 carries.

Athol opened the scoring when Parker hit Poor on a nine yard touchdown pass with 3:49 left in the first quarter and led 8-0. Belchertown responded on the next drive when Leduc scored on a 15 yard run to make it 8-7.
