Putnam vs East Longmeadow

SPRINGFIELD- East Longmeadow overcame an early deficit to secure their 4th win of the season on the road on the legs of sophomore running back Michael Maggipinto as they beat the Putnam Beavers 40-34.

East Longmeadow (4-1, 2-0) received 259 yards and 5 touchdowns from Maggipinto as he carried the ball 20 times.

Quarterback Devon Kennedy chipped in with key completions to move the chains. Kennedy finished 13-18 for 108 yards and an interception.

Putnam (1-4, 0-4) held a 26-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter after Wesley Humphries hauled in his second touchdown pass of the game from 33 yards out.

East Longmeadow responded on the next drive. After converting a fourth down conversion on a 12 yard run by Maggipinto, he scored on an 8 yard touchdown run two plays later to give the Spartans their first lead 27-26 with 11:07 left in the fourth quarter. East Longmeadow added two more Maggipinto touchdowns and had 20 unanswered points in the second half.

Putnam got a strong performance from running back Jaleel Kyles. He had 159 yards rushing on 26 carries and had a touchdown.

Quarterback Joshua Ortiz finished 8-16 for 168 yards and four touchdowns on the night. He also had 18 rushing yards on three carries.

Putnam jumped out to a 20-7 lead during the first 20 minutes of the first half. Ortiz hit long touchdowns of 56 yards to Kym Domino and 37 yards to Wesley Humphries.

Kyles also added in a 12 yard touchdown scamper and had 101 yards rushing in the first half. He had 101 yards rushing in the first half.

However, Putnam only completed one of the three two-point conversions and East Longmeadow was able to make it a one possession game before halftime. With 0:49 seconds left in the second quarter, senior captain Tanner Fazzino got around the left side of the Beaver defense on 4th and 5 for a 26 yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 20-14.


Belchertown vs Cathedral

The Cathedral Panthers defeated the Belchertown Orioles by rushing for 338 yards after a hail mary pass gave them the lead as time expired in the second quarter.

With three seconds on the clock, Cathedral quarterback Josh Wyzik heaved the ball down the middle of the field where senior Alex Provost juggled it multiple times before securing the catch and beat two Belchertown defenders and give Cathedral a 20-15 lead going into halftime.

After Belchertown turned the ball over on downs at the Cathedral five yard line, the Panthers went on a 14 play, 95 yard drive that consumed 7:26 of clock time and ended in a Wyzik touchdown run that extended the lead to 28-15.

Belchertown was able to answer when quarterback Nick Leduc connected on a four yard touchdown pass to Steven Boudreau, but Cathedral ate up too much clock time with their pounding running game, which featured three players with 10 carries or more.

Wyzik was only 2-7 for 76 yards, but his hail mary was the turning point for momentum and he led Cathedral in rushing with 156 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Senior Veshon Sharp had 50 yards on 13 carries and Sophomore Tim Patterson ran the ball 10 times for 55 yards.

Nick Leduc played outstanding for the Orioles as he fired three touchdown passes and racked up 201 yards through the air on 10-19 passing.

Junior receiver Jake Bradway hauled in 7 of Leduc’s 10 completion and had 149 yards receiving with two touchdowns.

The first half featured exciting back and forth action. The Orioles struck first when Bradway took a screen pass from Leduc 40 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0.

Cathedral responded with two touchdown drives. Wyzik ran 11 yards for a score to make it 7-6 with 8:31 left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, Tim Patterson scored on a 24 yard run to make it 12-6.

Belchertown responded with a 29 yard pass from Leduc to Bradway for a 15-12 lead with 1:48 to go until halftime.

Chicopee Comp vs Commerce

CHICOPEE-The Commerce Red Raiders (2-2) scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game and led from start to finish in a 20-6 victory over Chicopee Comp Colts (0-5) to secure their second win of the season.

The Red Raiders’ third play from scrimmage went for a 45 yard touchdown run by Dvonte Sewell, who had 26 carries for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Commerce quarterback Marques Gibson played an outstanding game. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 161 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and completed two long passes down field. One of them was Commerce’s second touchdown of the game, a 56 yard bomb from quarterback Marques Gibson to Nasir Thomas and after a successful two point conversion, Commerce held a 14-0 lead.

With 4:13 left in the second quarter, Commerce took a commanding 20-0 lead on a 3 yard pass from Gibson to Gabe Roman.

The Red Raiders were able to overcome 8 penalties for 85 yards, including 4 personal fouls.

Commerce’s defense was stout the whole game. They forced four turnovers and Gabe Roman, Nicolas Perry, and Nasir Thomas all had interceptions for the Red Raiders.

Chicopee Comp scored their only points of the game on a 35 yard pass from Michael Whitsett to Mike Bombard with 1:51 left before halftime.

Whitsett had 166 yards passing and a touchdown for the Colts, but also threw three interceptions and only completed 14 of 33 pass attempts. Six of his passes were caught by Cam Kagan, who had 74 yards receiving in a strong performance.

Whitsett also led Chicopee Comp in rushing with 28 yards on 7 carries. Unfortunately, his fumble on the opening drive led Commerce’s first touchdown.

Dylan English had two sacks to lead the Colt defense.

Chicopee Comp will take on Amherst next week at 7 p.m. while Commerce lines up against Chicopee at 5 p.m.

Ludlow vs Athol

LUDLOW- The Athol Red Raiders took advantage of five Ludlow Lion turnovers and got outstanding performances from their dual quarterback system to get their first win of the season.

Athol (1-2) got 166 total yards from Andrew Poor and 247 all-purpose from Jerry Parker. Poor had 2 touchdown passes while going 6-11 for 57 yards and had 6 catches for 94 yards. He also ran the ball 9 times for 15 yards.

Parker was 9-11 for 170 yards a touchdown passing and had 5 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. He also had 23 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Athol jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Ludlow fumbled on their first play of the game. The Red Raiders took advantage of the short field with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Poor to Parker. The lead became 8-0 before halftime when Ludlow’s Brian Pacheco fumbled in the end zone and recovered it to prevent the touchdown, but giving up a safety.

Ludlow responded in the second half as Pacheco took a toss around the left end of the line and tore down the sidelines for a 42 yard touchdown that cut the lead to 8-6.

Athol responded the very next drive. Poor hit Mark Brighenti on 5 yard catch and run. Three plays later, Brighenti hauled in a 3yard touchdown pass from Poor on fourth and goal to make it 14-6.

The Red Raiders then sealed the win with a 53 yard strike from parker to poor to make it 22-6. Ludlow’s comeback hopes ended when Pacheco’s attempt at a halfback pass was intercepted by Poor.

Ludlow’s quarterback Daniel Rodrigues had a strong game, but it wasn’t enough to get a victory. Rodrigues as 6-10 for 83 yards and hit six of his first seven pass attempts.

Brian Pacheco carried the ball 10 times for 52 yards and had the long touchdown run, but his two fumbles led to the first eight Athol points and gave them momentum to dominate the first half.

Belchertown vs Greenfield

BELCHERTOWN- The Greenfield Green Wave (2-1) held on to beat the resilient Belchertown Orioles (0-2) 28-12. After jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first half, Greenfield battled off the Orioles comeback attempt.

After seeing their lead cut to 20-12, Greenfield’s Mikal Dobbins fumbled the ball near midfield at the Orioles looked to drive for the game tying score. The Green Wave’s defense forced a punt which led to a 15 play, 79 yard touchdown drive that secured the victory for Greenfield, while eating up over eight minutes of clock in the fourth quarter. Jordan York-Welcome capped off the drive with a one yard run to make it 28-12.

York-Welcome led a Greenfield rushing attack that saw three players carry the ball six or more times. York Welcome had 16 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Brayton Stack had 6 carries for 31 yards and Freshman Elijah Brown 7 carries for 17 yards.

The Wave ran for 140 yards as a team and also passed for another 134. Quarterback Connor Eckstrom had 134 yards, 3 touchdowns and one pick on 8-16 passing.

Belchertown got a strong performance from their quarterback, Nick Leduc. Leduc had 32 yards on 6 carries and also completed 6-16 passes for 111, 2 touchdowns and one pick and threw some nice deep balls that were dropped.

Greenfield jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half on three touchdowns by Eckstrom. Stack took a screen pass and followed some nice blocking 30 yards for the first score. Then Eckstrom found Hickey on a deep corner for a 28 yard score. With 2:01 remaining until halftime, Hickey took a pass in the flat and made a couple defenders miss on his way to a 32 yard score.

Belchertown responded in the third quarter with a 37 yard bomb from Leduc to Jake Bradway. Following an interception, Leduc hit Mastorakis on a screen pass and the junior receiver went up the sideline for a 35 yard score.

First Game Story: Belchertown vs Turners Falls

I’m posting all my game stories from last fall’s High School football season freelancing with the Republican.

Turners Falls runs over Belchertown

BELCHERTOWN- Turners Falls ran over and around the Belchertown Orioles en roué to a 43-13 victory Friday night.

Junior Trent Borbeau led a rushing attack that accumulated 196 yards with 145 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

Turners Falls controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish and took control of the game early. They were up 20-0 four seconds into the second quarter after starting their first three drives in Oriole territory thanks to two fumbles by Belchertown Quarterback Nicholas Leduc.

Indians’ Quarterback Malcolm Smith, who was 8-11 for 78 yards and a touchdown, bulldozed his way through five Oriole defenders for a one yard touchdown run with 2:19 to go in the second quarter to give Turners a 28-7 lead. Smith rushed for 26 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Turners Falls took the second half kickoff and then ended the Orioles comeback hopes with a 13 play, 4:55 long touchdown drive capped off by a seven yard touchdown pass by Smith.

Belchertown scored 7:58 to go in the second when quarterback Nick Leduc found the end zone on a scramble.

The Orioles added another touchdown with less than thirty seconds to go in the fourth on a one yard touchdown pass to Jacob Mastorakis.

Leduc rebounded from a rough first half that included two fumbles and an interception to finish 11-18 with 104 passing yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 72 yards on 12 carries.

Belchertown hosts Greenfield next week while Turners Falls will take on Ludlow at home.
