Putnam vs Longmeadow

SPRINGFIELD- The Longmeadow Lancers (4-3, 3-2) received multiple big plays from their special teams unit en route to a victory over the Putnam (1-6, 0-6) on the Beavers’ senior night.

On a cold night where passing yards were at premium, the Longmeadow special teams gave their rushing attack short fields to operate. Longmeadow blocked a punt, recovered an onside kick, and had two big kick returns, one for a touchdown. All four plays happened in the first half and helped accumulate a 26-14 halftime lead.

The Lancers scored first on a 3 yard run by Max Chipouras with 8:15 left in the first quarter. After Longmeadow responded with a Milton Crawford one yard touchdown, Alex Calabrese returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

Putnam responded again, tying the game at 14 with one second left in the opening quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run by Jaleel Kyles. However, Longmeadow’s Chipouras returned the kickoff to the Putnam 40, setting up a 31 yard touchdown run by Keegan Barry.

Barry had two touchdowns and132 yards on 7 carries. Chipouras helped shoulder the rushing load with 17 carries for 176 yards and had three touchdowns.

Putnam saw their comeback chances dashed with less than a minute left in the third quarter, when A 29 yard touchdown run was negated by a holding penalty. They scored two touchdowns during the three final minutes of the 4th quarter, but the outcome of the game had already been decided.

Beaver quarterback Jaleel Kyles was 8-15 for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 79 yards on 16 carries.

Putnam also got a strong performance running back Milton Crawford. The senior rushed for 131 yards on 23 attempts an also caught four passes for 70 yards.

Putnam travels to Holyoke next week, while Longmeadow hosts Minnechaug. Both games will kick off at at 7 p.m.
